Nerve study
I had a nerve study done on my right arm yesterday. I was told that it would be very painful. It turned out not to be all that bad. I mean it isn’t something I’d do for fun or anything but it wasn’t that bad. For anyone who cares, during a nerve study they hook electrodes up to the body part being tested and then send a shock into the nerve to see if everything it being transmitted properly. In addition to that a doctor inserts a small needle attached to a sensor into the muscles and then has you move the muscles to make sure everything it moving properly. That part was especially not fun.
The whole point of this was to check me for carpal tunnel syndrome. I have an IT job so I’m prone to it and I have some very, very mild symptoms. However, the real trouble is that I have had a wicked case of tendinitis since about two weeks before Booger was born. I waited until he was 2 weeks old to go to the doc because you know when you’re pregnant they’ll tell you everything is caused by the pregnancy. So, when he was two weeks old and I was still hurting I went to the doc.
I did anti-inflammatory meds and physical therapy and I wear a night brace. It got better for a while but never truly went away. About a month ago I started getting these terrible sharp pains and I couldn’t move my hand. It was like the tendon was getting stuck or something. That was scary enough to send me back to the doc. More meds that helped but didn’t fix it landed me at the orthopedist.
After a shot in the wrist (ouch!) and a nerve study I go back next week to find out the next course of action. There has been talk of surgery. I’m not too keen on this but I’ve been reassured that it is a minor outpatient surgery and will fix the problem permanently. I don’t know how I will take care of a baby and do my job in the meantime though.
My sister-in-law is a massage therapist and I made the mistake of telling her about the issue. She wants me to come see her for 10-15 minutes a couple times a week to fix the issue instead of surgery. That’s all well and good but that adds up to a lot of time and money and the surgery would fix it and be covered on my insurance. I guess I just need to get more information about recovery time and such things. All this is somewhat premature I suppose since no decisions have been made but nothing else seems to be working so I just have this feeling that this is going to end under the knife.

going under the knife isn’t all *that* bad. you get pampered for a while afterwards, anyways… though taking care of Booger does pose a little problem here :) seriously though — surgery!? i didn’t know it was that bad.
