As far as it takes

By ImpostorMom

How far would you go for your kids? This is the question posed for this week’s PBN blog blast.

I believe that the answer for most parents is “as far as it takes”. I say this in regard to children’s safety, health and well being in general. This isn’t to say that there aren’t plenty of parents out there that would do what ever it took to get their kid into that coveted school or to procure the next must have electronic gadget. What I’m speaking of is the biological instinct that parents have to care for and protect our children from harm and danger.

As parents we give up so much of ourselves and our individual needs for our children. In the beginning it even requires a sacrifice of the most fundamental human needs. And you know what, we all do it gladly. We give up sleeping, eating and even going to the bathroom on a regular basis and when that tiny little person smiles at us it all seems worth it.

Thankfully, I haven’t yet had any experience with having to protect my son from danger or harm. I suspect that I would do anything to keep him safe, right up to sacrificing my own personal safety.

I’m not sure I could say the same about providing the more frivoulous things in life to him. I don’t intend to be standing in any lines at 4am the day after Thanksgiving to get some toy. I don’t see myself fighting other parents for a spot at the top college-prep preschool. In the grand scheme of life I just don’t see these things as being that important. I also believe it is important to teach my son that you actually don’t always get everything you want in life.

He doesn’t need another heap of plastic with lead paint from China and he’s a smart boy, he’ll go far without the Ivy League preschool. It’s my job to keep him safe and prepare him to be a good person, a kind, giving and loyal human being. I will go as far as it takes to accomplish that goal.
