Real life learning

By ImpostorMom

Boogie is 9.5 months old so he isn’t learning much in the way of school subjects. I do watch him everyday and see him understand new things about his world and I am amazed. He just takes everything in.

He has recently learned to wave and say bye bye, so I guess that’s his first word as well. Wow, that didn’t even dawn on me until just now.  He has learned to clap and pull up. Yesterday he actually stood for a few seconds without holding on to something so I suspect he’ll be learning to walk soon. He has learned that he can turn the pages of the books that we read before bed and this is more fun than trying to kick it out of my hands. He is also learning that the pool is not such a scary place thanks to swim classes twice a week. I’m trying to teach him sign language too but he has yet to make any signs (it’s only been a week).

However, I actually think a lot about his education beyond these things and on to school. My husband and I are both bright but academically lazy. All throughout school we were both bored and did just enough to get by. I suspect Boog will be the same. I want to keep him challenged and engaged and I want most of all for school to be fun for him. I can already tell that if it is presented correctly that he will love to learn. He absorbs so much now and gets so excited when he masters a new skill.

We are looking into Montessori education for him at some point. We visited our local school while I was pregnant and we were both so impressed by the philosophy and child guided approach to learning. I think I would have enjoyed that type of school experience a lot growing up and I’d like to offer that to my son if possible.

We are lucky to have a Montessori-type environment at our public school. It is awesome. They just absorb so much when it’s presented in the right way.

I love the idea of Montessori. My husband went to some when he was little and he liked it.

I do not, however, love the tuition payments.

I keep a Montessori-type theme to my homeschooling methods. My Monkeys are 9,6,3,1 & one on the way.
We tried public school, but, sadly, for boys, it wasn’t the best fit.
    I’m a bit more loosey-goosey.

    Love your blog!

I love Montessori schools also, and we are going to look into Montessori daycare/preschools at the very least when the Pumpkin is ready for daycare.

    Good luck!

I love Montessori schools, except for the price. LOL We homschool, but the Montessori is one of the methods that inspired me. As well as Waldorf.

Teaching them signs is so fun! My oldest took off with them, which I think accounts for his huge vocab now. My second wasn’t as interested in learning them, but he has his own way of comunicating. LOL

My 4 year-old is in a Montessori school. It is amazing how she learned to read in 4 months. I love Montessori!!!
