Haiku Friday

I hate decisions
do I stay or do I go
tech writing again

a new position
an old job at the same place
change but not too much

Is it all about
more money? That’s a big part
I would miss my boss

a great manager
to a micro manager
sacrifice it is

I would miss my peeps
still in the same building though
lots to think about

HELP! I have an opportunity to apply for a new job in my current company. It would be going back to Technical Writing but for a different department. I suppose this freak out and struggle is premature. After all I’m just talking about applying so there is no guarantee they’d even offer me the new position. It does pay about $8k more per year. Ugh, I hate trying to figure this stuff out.

I don’t know you that well, hard to advise, but when you have kids, extra money is always good… as long as you have great childcare, because without that, your life could be HELL! And, if you LOVE your work — that’s key…

Oooh tough decision. I did just that about a year ago and started a new job in my company. It has been good and bad. There are trade-offs with any new position and you have to weigh the good with the bad to see if its the right move. Good luck!

Well, just about every time I’ve made a decision based on money, it has NOT worked out in my favor. Of course, I don’t know all the details of your situation, but keep in mind that if you’re like me, you spend more time at work than you do at home.

Good luck! It’s tough, I know.

When I came back from maternity leave, I had a similar delimma. I decided to switch teams, even though it was for the position of Test Manager (and testing is not my calling), because it was closer to home and I really like the team. So far, this has been a great choice. I would have done it for a tech writing position, too. For me the team and the commute were worth it.

Will the pros be worth it to you? I always say I could be bought, but the price for which I could be bought would have to be pretty high. Is the raise and new team worth it? Can it hurt to at least apply and see what it would be like? Will this help you down your career path or derail you? Or do your current priorities (like mine for an easier commute) take prescendence over your career path for the moment?

Hmmm. It’s a difficult question. I hope the questions I threw out help. Feel free to contact me offline to talk further!

decision-making is not my best thing. i feel your pain! (plus leaving a great manager for a micromanager?? hmmm… that would give me second thoughts)

That’s a tough one. $8K is a lot of money, but a micro-manager is a lot of misery. Do you enjoy technical writing? Do you enjoy what you are doing now more or less? Is it a change that could lead to even more great change in the future? So much to ponder. Good luck with your decision!

(Me? Based on the information you gave? Would do it. Managers are not forever and usually can be tolerated.)

I hate when you have to make decisions that you know have drawbacks both ways. Good luck. I’m sure whichever way you lean will be the right one.
