My brother came for a surprise visit this week and met his nephew for the first time. He lives about 1000 miles away and with a family and kids of his own I can understand how it can be hard to find time to come visit. Plus we aren’t really that close. There are seven years between us and he moved away when I was 9 to live with our father in Texas.
That being said, whenever he leaves I always wish we lived closer and had the opportunity to become better friends now that we are both adults. He has two girls (one in the throws of being 15) and he throughly enjoyed playing with a little boy so new and not capable of talking back just yet. I throughly enjoyed watching him take such joy in my child. I was also very thankful that my child was so sweet and well behaved instead of the complete grump I know he can be.
After putting Boog down I ventured out in my pjs to deliver my brother to his rental car so that he could trek 3 hours north to visit our mother. We sat in the car in the Walmart parking lot and talked for upwards of 2 hours. It was nice. We talked about our parents and their varying situations and our own lives and children.
It’s always nice to get a different perspective on events that have happened in your own life. Sometimes it can help validate already established opinions but in some cases it can also help you to understand something that may not have occurred to you otherwise. Either way this particular visit made me long for my big brother and his family. It made me wish we were closer physically and emotionally. Cause I actually really like him, he’s a fun guy even if he’s a lot like my dad. :)

It’s great that you got to spend time with your brother. I hope that you can find a way to keep in better communication. It can be so hard, even when you do live close by.

My siblings and I really started getting along once we all had our own families too-it’s been so nice to kind of rediscover each other outside of who we were as kids.
Hope you guys get to spend more time together!!

Boy, again, did I write this post? My brother is 6.5 years older than I am and went off to college when I was in 6th grade. We’ve made a few inroads on friendship since then, but sometimes I still feel like I don’t really know who he is. I’m glad you had a chance to reconnect with yours!
