Pet Peeves
Have you seen this site? It’s pretty funny. Basically a place to voice your pointless pet peeves. I find the concept pretty funny. Sort of a kin to the site Mir talked about a couple of weeks ago, Stuff White People Like but you know, the other end of the spectrum.
I have a few “white whines” myself and they truly are silly and pointless but they drive me absolutely batty at times.
- “Foxfire.” I know several people–strangely mostly older–that say Foxfire instead of Firefox. Doesn’t matter how many times you correct them they still use the wrong name and I just don’t get it. My husband actually argued with one of these people at one point and they absolutely insisted that the name was indeed Foxfire not Firefox.
- The expression “could care less.” This makes absolutely no sense what so ever and drives me crazy when people say it. By saying “I could care less” you are in fact saying that you do care because you COULD care less. The correct expression would be “I couldn’t care less” meaning I actually don’t care at all so I couldn’t care any less.
- “on yesterday/last week, etc.” What?! That is just downright improper grammar and doesn’t make any sense at all. For example, “That was due on yesterday, is it finished?” I routinely hear phrases like that come out of some people’s mouths and I just do not get the need to insert and extra “on” where it is clearly not needed.
- Conference calls on speaker phone with the door open. I’m sorry but that’s just rude. If you have an office with a door why on earth would you NOT close it if you are going to take a call on speaker phone. I don’t sit at my desk in my cube and take calls on speaker phone. What’s even worse is calling someone that is no more than 100 yards from you on speaker phone with the door open, so everyone around both of you can hear the entire conversation but in this weird stereo sound. RUDE!!!
So, those are my completely not important and petty pet peeves. What are yours?

#2 makes me BONKERS. Really, it isn’t that hard to figure out. The worst part? I’ve caught myself doing it after being around other people that say it wrong. I hate when bad grammar is contagious.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when I’m looking at something in a store and someone else all but shoves me out of the way so that they can look at it too. I could have sworn we all learned to take turns in Kindergarten.

Couldn’t care less has always annoyed me also.

Most of my pet peeves are grammar/words ones. For example:
-Irregardless is not a word. If it was, the “ir” prefix would be the opposite of “regardless” which is what people are really trying to say.
-I hate the phrase “it is what it is.” It’s become so popular lately, but it is really a lame way to say what you are trying to say. So unimaginative. It drives me nuts.
-I hate when people misuse commas.
I could go on even more, but I misght start scaring people.
Funny story: At my wedding shower, one game was that I was asked questions that had been asked (prior to the shower) of my now husband about myself and our relationship. It was to see if our answers would match, like The Newlywed Game. One question was, “What is your (my) biggest pet peeve?” I thought and mumbled, “Man, do I have to pick just one?”
It turns out that was EXACTLY what my husband said!

#3 - I had a principal (A PRINCIPAL) who always said things were due “on tomorrow.” Drove me batshit crazy.

I hate it when people get common phrases wrong, like “Put your John Henry right there” (meaning to sign something). It’s your JOHN HANCOCK, people, like the man who SIGNED the declaration of Independence.
Or when someone says “It’s six of one, a dozen of other.” No, it’s six of one, HALF a dozen of the other.
Or when people say “two twins.” Twins implies two. If you say two twins you are actually talking about four people.
As you can see, I too could go on and on!

I have a pet peeve to add. Faint Blue Lines!!!!
