Are we really qualified for this?

These past couple of weeks I’ve noticed certain aspects of mine and my husband’s personalities that have led me to wonder if we are really qualified for this whole child raising thing. That is of course unless we are trying to raise a completely cynical, sarcastic and completely anal little human.

Let’s begin with cartoons. We’ve found ourselves watching a ridiculous amount of Jack’s Big Music Show and lately Oswald. With Boog’s recent discovery of the gloriousness that is the television he has now been requesting “Jks” by name.

Don’t get me wrong as far as Noggin shows go, Jack’s is a pretty tolerable show until you’ve seen them all 4,593 times. You start to see sexual innuendo in some episodes, like the one where Sudsy Bubblestein has to entice Mel into the bath. I swear she turns on music to set the mood and it’s all I can do not to bust out a “bow chicka bow wow.”

I am sad at the lack of Jack’s merchandise because I just know Boog would totally loose it over a Mel doll. And I would totally rather him carry around that green and purple dog than Elmo or god forbid Dora or Diego.

I’ve also been know to point out huge plot holes in Oswald. Like the time Daisy and Oswald are making Super Sticky Honey Buns and got stuck together and then get stuck to everyone who tries to help them EXCEPT that Daisy totally opens a door with her dough covered hand yet it doesn’t stick to the door. Hmmm, curious.

Oh and then there is the time that Oswald has to climb up on his piano to help a friend retrieve a balloon stuck in a tree. Except the friend is a BUTTERFLY. She HAS wings for god’s sake. I mean she’s not even standing when she cries for help, she’s hovering so why the hell can’t she get her own damn balloon. Instead Oswald climbs up on a piano that is on roller skates might I add to retrieve the balloon. That is the much safer option of course.

I know, I know. These things aren’t made for adults. You shouldn’t read too much into them and they require a certain amount of suspension of reality. The real question is at what point will Boog begin to pick up on our sarcastic commentary on his favorite shows? And will such commentary really matter to him?

We’ve got opinions on Boog’s favorite books as well, but I’ll save those for another time. Hope everyone had a good, long holiday weekend.

  1. All that children’s TV is starting to eat away at your brain I see! When you start questioning plot developments, that’s when you’ve reached the pinnacle, you know.

BTW, Alexis already picks up some of the sarcastic commentary. I realized yesterday that she got, “I have it under control” (said while giving me the hand) from a cartoon. Oops.

  2. I love the rampant innuendo in kids stuff. It’s why I LOVE the Muppets, Fairly Oddparents, etc.

No way is a kid going to pick up on it.

But then innuendo is not a new thing. Anyone remember Mr. McFeely and his Speedy Delivery???? Granted, I doubt Fred Rogers realized it at the time. ..

  3. You’ve totally been watching way too many cartoons.
