We headed to Hilton Head Island, SC for our annual Labor Day beach trip last weekend. This year was better and worse than last year. It was better in that it didn’t rain at all and the weather was wonderful. It was worse in that it was the first year without my stepfather. My mother enjoyed herself but she was not without moments of sadness. I am at a loss as to what to do to help her in any way. I’m not sure there is anything much I can do. I think that this is a wound only time can heal if it can be healed at all.
Much of the trip was great. Boog was an absolute peach pretty much the entire time. I didn’t have to use his time out rug once. He was a dream during the 5+ hour car ride there and a dream on the ride back as well. I credit that to his new obsession with Finding Nemo and our newly purchased DVD player that straps to the headrest in front of him.
He LOVED the beach and the pool. In fact he loved it a little too much for my taste. His daddy was heading out into the ocean and by god he was just gonna follow him right out there. He had no fear. That’s more than I can say for his mama. He fell a few times and got covered in the waves but nothing seemed to phase him. He loved the pool just as much and would jump off the side regardless if anyone was there to catch him. Yeah, that might not be so good. We need to get that boy in some swimming classes ASAP.
My husband rented a bike with a child seat on it and they took bike rides on the beach. I’m told he enjoyed that as well although from my point of view it looked as if all he could see was his daddy’s backside. We had originally decided we were not going to make this trip this year because we couldn’t afford it. My mom talked us into it and now I’m glad she did. We all really enjoyed our time there.
It’s amazing to me how if my child enjoys something it makes me enjoy it that much more. I am not generally a beach person. I do not care to be hot and I loathe bathing suits. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the sheer joy on Boog’s face while he was in the ocean with his daddy and playing in the sad. Totally worth the heat and sand in various sensitive places.
I think I am more partial to Hilton Head rather than Folly Beach however. We went to Folly last year and we did not stay on the beach. We were on the island but not walking distance to the beach. Hilton Head seems to have more availability as far as affordable accomodations right on the beach. I think I’ll push for our trip to be Hilton Head every year, especially since we got a ridiculous deal on the condo.
I was exhausted when we got home and I ended up taking yesterday off work as well. Aren’t you supposed to get more rest on a vacation? When we got home amidst the piles of laundry I also realized we were practically out of food. I spent yesterday catching up on the every day stuff that gets neglected when you’re on vacation. I guess it’s back to the daily grind.

Welcome back! I’m glad y’all had a great time and that you were able to get fab photos. Hopefully the transition back to the grind will be a smooth one.

That sounds like so much fun! I know what you mean about things seeming more fun when your child is enjoying it. Great pics too. I can’t believe how big he is!
Why is it that we always need a vacation when we get back from vacations?
